In a recent article in Popular Science, remote sensing has turned over a new leaf for archaeology. Instead of the greatest finds in the deepest digs, archaeologists are discovering a literal overview of past civilizations, their architecture, social patterns and urban planning via satellite imaging. Aerial surveillance obviously is not a new concept but the combination with remote sensing exposes sites that are normally invisible to the  naked eye. “Archaeologists have to tailor remote sensing to their sites. Satellite imagery is valuable for wet agricultural regions like the delta or heavily forested areas, while treeless plains or deserts call for radar.”

Perhaps Indiana Jones could use space technology in the next sequel.
